Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS)
Meet Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS)
Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) is a massive 14.5-hectare (47-acre) ceremonial plaza and commercial complex located at the core of Lagos Island, Lagos, Nigeria. Rebuilt in 1972 on a 19th-century colonial racetrack, this landmark represents the literal birthplace of modern Nigeria—hosting the nation's definitive transition from British rule to sovereign nationhood The complex is overseen by the Tafawa Balewa Square Management Board (TBSMB). It currently serves as a 24/7 destination, blending deep national heritage with a booming cultural scene The Lagos Race Course Era: Before its concrete transformation, the site was known as the Lagos Race Course, established in 1859 by Oba Dosunmu. It was initially used for horse racing, sports, and elite British Empire Day parades The Midnight of Freedom: On October 1, 1960, the field hosted Nigeria’s official independence ceremony. Before a massive crowd, the British Union Jack was lowered, the green-white-green flag was hoisted, and Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa delivered his inaugural speech.
The Gowon-Era Reconstruction: To solidify its status as a grand post-colonial monument, the military administration of General Yakubu Gowon reconstructed the field into a grand concrete stadium complex between 1971 and 1972.
